Terms of Service
Last updated: October 16, 2026· Version 2026-10-16
These terms apply to your use of Clinical Skill Lab (the "service"), operated by NYU Shanghai ("we", "us"). By creating an account you agree to them. Please read them together with our Privacy Policy.
1. What the service is
Clinical Skill Lab is a training tool. You practise conversations with simulated patients that are generated by artificial intelligence (AI), and you receive automated scores and feedback on your interpersonal skills.
The service is for education and practice only. It is not therapy, not a counselling or crisis service, and not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or monitor anyone, and it must not be used with or for real patients or clients.
2. Who may use it
The service is intended for trainees, students and clinicians in mental-health and related fields who want to practise their skills. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account.
3. Your account
- Give a valid email address and keep your password confidential.
- Your account is personal. Do not share it or let others use it.
- Tell us without delay if you think someone else has accessed your account.
- You are responsible for activity under your account unless it happened without your fault.
4. Acceptable use
When using the service, you must not:
- enter real patient or client data, or any other information that identifies a real person, into sessions, custom patients or any other field;
- impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation;
- harass, abuse or threaten anyone, or use the service to create unlawful content;
- try to break, overload, reverse engineer or bypass the security of the service, or try to manipulate the AI into producing harmful content outside the training purpose;
- use automated tools to access the service or collect its content, except as we allow.
We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules.
5. Limits of the AI
Simulated patients, their replies, scores and feedback are produced by AI. They can be inaccurate, inconsistent, incomplete or unexpected, and they do not represent any real person.
Scores and feedback are training feedback only. They are not a qualification, certification, grade or clinical assessment, and they should not be used as the sole basis for decisions about anyone's competence. Use your own professional judgement and the guidance of your supervisors.
6. Sensitive and crisis content
Some simulated patients portray difficult experiences, including suicidal crises, self-harm and trauma. This is deliberate, so that you can practise responding safely. You can stop a session at any time.
If you are personally in crisis or worried about your own safety, please do not rely on this service. Contact your local emergency services (in the EU, call 112) or a crisis line in your country straight away.
7. Credits and payments
If credits are enabled, some features use credits. Credits can be bought through our payment provider Stripe; the price is shown before you pay.
Credits have no cash value, cannot be transferred or exchanged for money, and are not refundable, except where the law requires a refund. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.
8. Research use
Your data is used for research only if you take part in a study and give your separate, explicit consent for that study. The study's own information sheet and consent form then describe what is collected and how it is used. Taking part is voluntary, and not taking part does not affect your use of the service.
9. Intellectual property
The service, including its software, design, simulated patient profiles and texts, is protected by intellectual property rights. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use it for your own training for as long as your account exists.
Content you write in the service (for example your replies in a session or a custom patient you create) remains yours. You give us the rights needed to store and process it in order to provide the service to you.
10. Availability, changes and termination
The service is provided as part of an ongoing project. We aim to keep it available but cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation, and features may change or be discontinued.
You can stop using the service and ask us to delete your account at any time. We may end or suspend access with reasonable notice, or immediately for a serious breach of these terms.
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we will tell you in advance, for example by email or in the service. The version that applies is shown at the top of this page.
11. Liability
We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, under the German Product Liability Act (Produkthaftungsgesetz), and where we have given a guarantee.
For slight negligence we are liable only for breach of an essential contractual obligation (an obligation whose fulfilment makes the proper performance of the contract possible and on which you may regularly rely), and only up to the damage typically foreseeable at the time the contract was concluded.
Otherwise our liability is excluded as far as German law allows. These limits also apply to our staff and agents.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you use the service as a consumer, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of the country where you usually live.
